- How do I volunteer?
Come along to the ULVG HQ (91 Lower Luton Road Harpenden) at 10am on the last Sunday of any month (except December), wearing suitable outdoor clothing, and make yourself known! If you are travelling a distance, it is recommended that you telephone 01582 621017 before setting out to make sure there are no unforeseen last minute change of plans.
- What do I need to provide?
Enthusiasm - there are tasks for all, light and heavier.
Working cloths - wear stout footgear, bring gloves and be prepared to get to get dirty, it's outdoor work.
- What will the ULVG provide?
A sense of satisfaction for a job well done.
Tools - everything needed will be available and training on how to use the various tools will be given as required.
Insurance is provided - (public liability and personal accident) by the scheme operated by the BTCV to which the ULVG is affiliated.
- Do I need any qualifications to help?
No - a willingness to do physical work voluntarily is all that's needed
- Are there age limits for volunteers?
The Group appreciates help from people aged between 11 and 75 years of age.
- If I volunteer, will I have to attend every work party?
No - come frequently if you would like to or just occasionally, to suit yourself.
- I'm not keen on physical work, but am keen to support the ULVG, is there anything else I can do?
Yes - particularly in the area of publicity. If you have any skills in the field of PR and live locally we'd like to hear from you.
- Can I receive news of the ULVG without attending work parties?
Yes - log on regularly to this site to read the latest electronic newsletter or email for details of how to receive regular copies of the Harpenden Society newsletter in which the ULVG always posts news.
- Is there a membership fee?
No - you can come along as a volunteer without a joining fee. However, if you would like to be become a member and receive a regular newsletter from the Harpenden Society (of which the ULVG is part) this will cost £4 individual or £5 family. Please email for details.
- How is the Group funded?
The ULVG is a daughter organisation of the Harpenden Society, the local Civic Society, which funds some of the ULVG needs - including this website; materials come from other sources and the labour is voluntary.
- Has the ULVG published anything?
Yes. Some years ago the Group published a pamphlet "Harpenden Upper Lea Valley Guide". It contains useful sections on topics such as Natural History and Local History as well as the route of Lea Valley Walk through Harpenden; all of which may be a useful study aid. A few parts of the Guide are however now out of date; the Group is therefore prepared to issue this Guide FREE to anyone wanting a copy.
